Across Europe, including the United Kingdom, regulatory momentum around PFAS and broader fluorinated chemistries is accelerating. Industrial buyers, emergency services and public sector organisations are reassessing the material composition of protective clothing and equipment. Fluorinated finishes and membranes have historically delivered water repellency, oil resistance and durability in demanding environments. However, long term environmental and regulatory considerations now require a structured transition.

Dobtho’s strategy is not confined to a single product category. It spans protective uniforms, turnout systems, technical outerwear and performance textiles across our Wear and Equipment and Technical Textiles segments. The objective is to reduce and ultimately eliminate reliance on fluorine based chemistry while maintaining certified protection levels and operational performance.

The transition is being managed in phases. Current product launches are engineered to reduce fluorinated inputs where technically feasible, without compromising compliance with heat, flame, high visibility or moisture resistance standards. In some applications, controlled compromises remain necessary to maintain protection thresholds and service life. These decisions are made transparently, benchmarked against measurable performance criteria rather than marketing claims.

Parallel to these launches, Dobtho is investing in the development of fully fluorine free chemistry platforms. This includes collaboration with fibre manufacturers, membrane developers and finishing specialists to validate alternative repellent technologies and barrier systems. Laboratory benchmarking focuses on hydrostatic resistance, breathability, contamination management, durability under industrial laundering and retention of protective properties over time. The removal of fluorine must not create secondary weaknesses in abrasion resistance, seam integrity or field performance.

Our roadmap defines a clear milestone. By 2027-28, Dobtho intends to introduce a series of fully fluorine free protective systems across relevant product categories, including emergency response and industrial protective wear. These systems are being engineered as complete platforms, not isolated garments. Protection against heat and flame, moisture ingress, mechanical stress and contamination must meet recognised European and international standards within a fluorine free framework.

The shift requires more than chemistry substitution. It demands coordinated material selection, revised finishing processes, supplier alignment and structured testing. It also requires engagement with end users to ensure that environmental progress does not come at the expense of operational practicality. Field validation remains as important as laboratory data.

Dobtho’s approach acknowledges present constraints while defining a clear destination. Immediate product series reduce fluorinated dependency where possible. Ongoing research and controlled testing build towards full elimination. The long term objective is to deliver protective clothing and engineered textile systems that combine regulatory compliance, durability and environmental responsibility without reliance on PFAS or related fluorinated compounds.

Organisations across Europe and the United Kingdom preparing for evolving chemical regulations and sustainability targets are invited to engage with Dobtho. Our programme is structured around defined milestones and measurable outcomes, with a commitment to launching fully fluorine free protective systems by 2027-28.
